Between 1949 and 1951, Nathaniel was stationed in the British Crown Colony of Malta as a serving Royal Navy officer. The Countess then visited the Daphne Memorial in Valletta. The Duchess laid a bouquet of flowers to honour Daphne Caruana Galizia at the makeshift memorial in Valletta.

During the event, the Countess inspected the Guard of Honour, delivered a speech, and chatted with members of the soldiers' families. After their deployment, 5 Rifles celebrated their return with a parade at Picton Barracks, attended by the Countess of Sussex and other distinguished guests.
